Overview
The International Standards Organization (ISO) provides uniform standards, that is, a baseline, for auditing internal processes. ISO standard 9001 measures an organization's quality control systems for products and customer service. A checklist used in auditing these systems within an organization ensures that the auditors examine the same policies and processes annually, which keeps the information collected uniform over time.
Quality Control Policy
Begin the ISO standard 9001 checklist with the company's quality and customer service policy. Break it down into its component parts, then list: management's commitment to following the policy, its success in following the policy, the existence of employee training as to the policy requirements and achievement of the policy's goals in the actual quality of products and service to customers.
Laws and Regulations
Identify all domestic and foreign quality control regulations and list: existence of regulatory requirements, compliance with regulatory requirements, employee training as to regulatory requirements, i.e., what they are and how to follow them, and if and how changes in laws and regulations are tracked and implemented.
Safety
List all possible hazards the business's processes pose to employees and customers and the safety procedures in place to protect against them. Then list: regular review of hazards, the procedures in place to protect against each one, the evolution of safety procedures to keep pace with new hazards, employee training as to the safety procedures and whether they are routinely followed.
Command Chain
List each tier of the company's command chain with corresponding responsibilities. Then list: fulfillment of responsibilities, following of the chain of command, protections against conflicts between employees and the command tier immediately above them, and existence of procedures to resolve disputes between employees within differing command tiers.
