I've been evaluating virtual routers/firewalls for my VPS (cloud computing) service, and elaborates on the different vendors available as well as multi-tenency vs. isolation. One of the major problems for me, are the 'paywalls' in front of Cisco and other's download sites. Most systems I've tries are similar in terms of features, but the overall architecture differs a lot.

Asa

Isolated (per customer)

  • pros: security, performance, simplicity, end-user management

  • cons: overhead, scalability(?), cost

Multi-tentent

  • pros: cost, system maintenance

  • cons: complexity

Juniper vSRXhttp://www.juniper.net/support/downloads/?p=firefly#sw (paywall?)

License
  • os: Junos/FreeBSD

  • pros: very similar to srx, trusted vendor, api, unix shell, combined fw/router, excellent api

  • cons: price, difficult to evaluate, vmware only(?)

Cisco CSR1000vhttp://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=284364978&softwareid=282046477&release=3.9.0aS&flowid=39582 (paywall?)

  • os: IOS-XR/QNX(?)

  • pros: trusted vendor, tons of documentation, api, excellent router(!)

  • cons: price(?), $/mbps, primarily router (ASA=fw), difficult to evaluate

Vyatta/VyOShttp://www.vyatta.org/downloadshttp://vyos.net/wiki/Main_Page

  • os: Linux

  • pros: community is open source, large user base, juniper-style config, api, high performance, root shell, apt-get

  • cons: brocade killed community, community has no webui, rollback requires reboot

Halonhttp://dl.halon.se/vsr/

  • os: OpenBSD

  • pros: webui, open source(?), api, juniper-style config/rollback/commit, inexpensive, root shell, pkg_add

  • cons: small community, unknown vendor, no IPS

pfSensehttp://www.pfsense.org/mirror.php?section=downloads

  • os: FreeBSD

  • pros: webui, open source, free, very easy to use, large community, root shell, pkg_add

  • cons: incomplete bgp/ospf, xml config, no config cli, no api

Malwarebytes Premium Trial License Key 2017

m0n0wallhttp://m0n0.ch/wall/downloads.php

  • os: FreeBSD

  • pros: open source, very small image, root shell, pkg_add

  • cons: less feature complete than pfSense, doesn't really make sense to use

Have anyone of you tried Juniper of Cisco? Any feedback of my pros/cons list? What would you have used, for giving firewall/VPN/routing features to your VPS/cloud customers? I'm currently using the built-in firewall in Xen, but like to offer additional functionality.

This vulnerability affects Cisco ASA Software Release 9.4 and later and Cisco FTD Software Release 6.0 and later on both physical and virtual appliances if SIP inspection is enabled and the software is running on any of the following Cisco products:

  • 3000 Series Industrial Security Appliance (ISA)
  • ASA 5500-X Series Next-Generation Firewalls
  • ASA Services Module for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches and Cisco 7600 Series Routers
  • Adaptive Security Virtual Appliance (ASAv)
  • Firepower 2100 Series Security Appliance
  • Firepower 4100 Series Security Appliance
  • Firepower 9300 ASA Security Module
  • FTD Virtual (FTDv)

SIP inspection is enabled by default in both Cisco ASA Software and Cisco FTD Software. For detailed information about the default settings for application inspection policies, refer to the Cisco ASA Series Firewall CLI Configuration Guide.
